If an affiliate refers someone to the site to buy something, does it get tracked for the affiliate? I remember Ryan saying the ID is not assigned to the affiliate until a person joins. Is "guest" a level that allows this? If no, then an affiliate really doesn't get credit off of a guest? Or is there a way around this? ______________________

Ecommerce products must be referred to directly by the affiliate. For example, if an affiliate refers someone to your site, and that affiliate buys $10,000 of products over the next 5 years, the member does not get the commission UNLESS that member referred that affiliate to an ITEM IN THE STORE that the affiliate purchased. _________________________________

Does this have to happen each instance? To make sure I understand this;
1. Is there a difference between referring a prospect to the site with an affiliate link vs. referring them to a product?Iif so, what's the difference?
2. If a member refers a "guest" to a product, the guest buys and the member gets credit. The guest comes back to buy something again later, the affiliate that first referred them does not get credit unless they referred them again, is this correct?

1) yes there is a difference. Referring someone to the site sets the cookie for the life of the cookie (over 2 years or until user clears cookies), and referring someone to a product just carries over the refferral code and is ONLY good if they order that product then.
2) No, once anyone buys a product from the store, and, in the customer database a member is associated with that customer (this can be done manually as well), the member will always get credit for that product.
Please read up the ecommerce module and the affiliate module for more details - both in admin mamual _________________________________
